At the present time, the only wild breeding flock of whooping cranes stages a phenomenal migration each year between its Canadian nesting grounds and its winter sanctuary along the Texas Coastal Bend.

The tallest bird in North America, the whooper once ranged over much of the continent.

These cranes rapidly gave way to the advance of human settlers across the land.  Many were shot for food or trophies; others vanished as their marshlands were drained and cleared.
