The sperm whale was once the prime target of the pelagic whaling industry. The species was taken in enormous numbers, and it is amazing they survived at all. The sperm whale, along with many of the other great whales, is now classified as endangered under U.S. federal statutes. Most marine mammals found in Texas waters are also on the state list of endangered or threatened species.
