Kemp's Ridley Sea Turtle Sea turtles were once fairly common along the Texas coast and were netted commercially from Matagorda Bay southward during the late nineteenth century. Both juveniles and adults also perished in increasing numbers in the nets of shrimp boats. With its numbers dropping perilously, Kemp's ridley sea turtle was named an endangered species in 1970.
