The red wolf once ranged from central Texas to Florida. However, the
species gave way to habitat loss and
predator-control projects. By the 1960s, only a few red wolves
remained in Texas and Louisiana.
The passage of
the Endangered Species Act enabled the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to
capture the remaining wolves.
In 1987, four pairs of adult red wolves were released at Alligator River
National Wildlife Refuge.
This event
marked the first time in the United States that an endangered species
previously deemed extinct in the wild was
returned to its native habitat.
