The ferruginous pygmy-owl occurs in the U.S. only in the extreme southern portions of Arizona and Texas.

It is partial to saguaro deserts and open woodlands in Arizona.  In Texas it has been recorded primarily in remnant mesquite and ebony tracts from the Rio Grande Delta upriver to Falcon Dam.

This unique subspecies, often called the cactus pygmy-owl was proposed for federal listing under the Endangered Species Act in 1994.
