Contrary to popular folklore, humans had little to fear from the wild
wolves, and cowhands even crawled into dens
to shoot the females and their pups.
The last authenticated reports of
Mexican wolves in Texas occurred in
December of 1970. One male was shot on a large ranch south of Alpine in
Brewster Country, and a few days later
another was poisoned on a ranch east of Marathon.
The Mexican wolf was
placed on the federal list of endangered
species in 1976.
