In fresh water, manatees feed on water hyacinths, hydrilla and other aquatic plants.  In salt water, manatees subsist primarily on sea grasses.

The decline of natural habitat has made survival almost impossible for the manatee in Texas coastal waters.  Boats and barges also pose serious threats to the slow-moving animals in shallow coastal waters.
